English: [The Gemara challenges:] “Coming” and “dwelling” are written regarding them?! This is what [R’ Yishmael] is saying: to teach that wherever Scripture states “coming” and “dwelling,” the obligation applies only after inheritance and settlement — these are the words of R’ Yishmael. R’ Akiva said to him: But Shabbos is written with “dwellings”… [R’ Yishmael replies in effect:] One point — I spoke of “coming” and “dwelling” together; and further — Shabbos is a kal vachomer of its own.
On the daf: The dual phrasing “inherit and dwell” becomes a paradigm (binyan av). Land-dependent mitzvos that use this language take effect only after the fourteen years of conquest and division. R’ Akiva’s challenge from Shabbos is answered by noting that Shabbos lacks the paired “coming” language and is independently known.
