Sifrei on “this day”

Core Text

English: “This day” — that they should be in your eyes as new, as if you received them today from Mount Sinai.

In Sifrei: The repeated “this day” throughout Devarim is read as a demand for perpetual freshness in the acceptance of the commandments.

Type of Learning

Custom (aggadic expansion of “hayom”).

What Is Learned

The commandments are to be treated as newly given each day, not as old routine.
