Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
וְזָבַחְתָּ — פְּרָט לְעוֹפוֹת, פְּרָט לְמְנָחוֹת. אֵין זְבִיחָה אֶלָּא בִּבְהֵמָה.

English: “And you shall slaughter” — this excludes birds, this excludes meal-offerings. Slaughter applies only to animals.

In context: The verb זבח limits the command of shelamim-and-rejoicing at the stones to animals that are shechted. Birds (which are killed by melikah) and menachos (flour offerings) fall outside this particular rite.

Type of Learning

R’ Eliezer #2 (מיעוט) — exclusion from the verb of slaughter.

What Is Learned

The obligation to offer shelamim in this context applies to animal sacrifices, not to birds or flour offerings.
