Core Text

English: “Haskes” — form groups (kittot) and occupy yourselves with Torah, for the Torah is acquired only in company. As R’ Yosei son of R’ Chanina said: “A sword is upon the boasters” — these are Torah scholars who study Torah alone (bad be-vad).

On the daf: The rare word הסכת is read as an acronym / play on עשו כתות. Torah study in isolation is criticized; acquisition requires a chavurah.

Type of Learning

Custom (derasha on a unique biblical word).

What Is Learned

Torah is acquired in groups, not by a lone learner.
