Core Text

English: “Haskes” — crush yourselves over the words of Torah. As Resh Lakish said: From where do we know that words of Torah endure only in one who “kills himself” over them? As it is stated “This is the Torah: when a man dies in a tent.”

On the daf: A second reading of הסכת links it to כתתו (crush). Lasting acquisition of Torah demands total dedication, to the point of self-sacrifice in the tent of study.

Type of Learning

Custom (second derasha on the same unique word).
