Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “And the Leviim shall respond” — in the Holy Tongue; it is written here “the Leviim shall respond with a loud voice” and there “and God answered him by voice.”

In context: The gezeirah shavah from Matan Torah (where Hashem’s “answer by voice” was in Lashon HaKodesh) requires that the Leviim’s public proclamation of the blessings and curses also be delivered in the Holy Tongue.

Type of Learning

R’ Yishmael #2 (גזירה שוה) — “answer / voice” links the Leviim’s proclamation to the divine speech at Sinai.

What Is Learned

The blessings and curses were proclaimed by the Leviim in Lashon HaKodesh.
