Type of Learning

Custom (A precise diyuk from the phrase “and sets it up in secret,” teaching that the prohibition of benefit takes effect only after the secret act of worship.)

What Is Learned

Unlike a gentile’s idol, which becomes forbidden immediately upon manufacture, an Israelite’s idol becomes forbidden only once it has been worshipped. The words “vesam basater” allude to the clandestine worship that triggers the prohibition.
