Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “Cursed be one who degrades his father and his mother” — one who comes upon a married woman thereby degrades the parents who raised wicked children in their house.

On the daf: Sotah 37b reads several of the arur statements as facets or consequences of arayos. Disrespect of parents is presented both as a free-standing prohibition and as the natural outcome of a household that produces illicit relations.

Type of Learning

Custom (aggadic extension within the Sotah 37b series).

What Is Learned

The curse against degrading parents reinforces kibbud av va-em both directly and as a preventive against the broader breakdown associated with arayos.
