Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
אָרוּר מַטֶּה מִשְׁפַּט גֵּר יָתוֹם וְאַלְמָנָה – שֶׁאֵין לָהֶם עוֹזֵר וְהַדִּין נַעֲשֶׂה בְּסֵתֶר

English: “Cursed be one who perverts the justice of the stranger, the orphan and the widow” — for they have no helper and the judgment can be twisted in secret.

The classical source expands or derives a specific point from the language of the passuk. The Core Text above is the relevant region of interest.

Type of Learning

Custom (A positive recognition that these three categories are especially vulnerable to hidden injustice, which is why the Torah singles them out for a public national oath.)

What Is Learned

Because the ger, yasom and almanah lack powerful advocates, a judge or litigant can distort their case without public outcry. The Amen of the entire people therefore creates a collective commitment to protect the defenseless even when no one is watching.
