Core Text
English: “Whether male or female” — a definite male, a definite female, and not a tumtum or androginos.
On the daf / in context: Baraisa on gender clarity for shelamim. Specifying both sexes excludes animals of ambiguous sex. (Halachah follows the view that a tumtum is treated as possibly male or female, refining the practical rule.)
Type of Learning
R’ Eliezer #2 (מיעוט) — definite male/female excludes ambiguous sex.
What Is Learned
A shelamim must be a clearly male or clearly female animal, not a tumtum or androginos.
