למטר השמים. תניא, מרחיקין את הזרעים מן הכותל שלשה טפחים מפני שמעלה חלודה, ותיפק ליה משום מיא, תנא בארץ ישראל קאי, דכתיב בה למטר השמים תשתה מים ר"ל דמקשה ל"ל לומר טעם משום שזרעים קשים לכותל שמחלידים את הקרקע שתחתיו תיפק ליה דכיון שצריך להשקותן תמיד, וכיון שא"א לזרעים בלא מים ל"ל למיתני זה, הא כבר תנינן היזק דלחלוח אצל כותל, ומשני דכיון דכתיב בה למטר השמים תשתה מים עיני ה' אלהיך בה וכו', וא"כ הגשמים יורדים בלא"ה והוא לא עשה מאומה ולכן צריך טעם אחר.
English: It was taught: One distances seeds three tefachim from a wall because they raise mildew. Why not simply because of water? The baraita is set in the Land of Israel, of which it is written “from the rain of the heavens it drinks water.” Since rain falls of itself and the sower did nothing, a separate reason (mildew/rust on the wall’s ground) is needed beyond the usual damage from moisture.
