The Complete Passuk

For GOD’s anger will flare up against you, shutting up the skies so that there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its produce; and you will soon perish from the good land that GOD is assigning to you.

TT lemma: וחרה אף ה' (unit 1 of 9).

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: It was taught: Rabbi Yishmael says: It is said here, “the anger of Hashem will burn,” and there (Mishpatim), “My anger will burn and I will kill you with the sword.” Just as there the sword is stated, so here too the sword is implied. [Mekhilta on Mishpatim]

On the daf / in context: Torah Temimah places this derasha on Devarim 11:17. The Core Text is the words of Chazal (as transmitted in the source named above).

Type of Learning

R’ Yishmael #2 (gezerah shavah)

What Is Learned

The shared phrase “anger will burn” links the drought warning to the harsher language of the sword elsewhere in the Torah.
